Top food from the United States to know and taste

When deciding to take a trip, I always seek to know the typical foods of that place. After all, one of the best ways to get to know a country is through its cuisine. In North America, this is no different, and, know, there are many delicious foods from the United States that are delicious to know!

Although the films and series show a cuisine based on hamburgers, cereal, and bacon, many other foods are traditionally consumed by the population and often do not even hear about.

16 Typical food in the United States

The most traditional foods on an American menu have inspirations from around the world. This is because they originate several adaptations of dishes from immigrants from all over the world. When they arrived in the country, they adapted their recipes with local ingredients, originating delicious foods in the United States.

To learn a little more about American culture and find out what typical American foods are, we have put together a small guide to help you in this search. Here are the culinary highlights of this country that we love:

-Buffalo wings

The famous Buffalo Wings, seasoned chicken wings.

Buffalo, this recipe has only the name. LOL. In this dish, the leading food is chicken wings, seasoned with a sauce made from vinegar and butter. According to the legend of the country, the dish received its name because it appeared in the city Buffalo, in the state of New York.

Buffalo Wings are usually served as portions and are perfect appetizers to accompany a beer, for example. It’s a really traditional dish, and you can find it in just about any snack bar, bar, or restaurant in the United States. You have to try it!

-Mac and Cheese

Mac and Cheese, a darling.

Many tourists and natural Americans have mac and Cheese as their favorite food in the United States. And although the origin of the dish made from macaroni and Cheese is Italian, it was in the North American country that it gained its true popularity.

The recipe for this succulent dish has cheddar cheese, mozzarella, parmesan, bechamel sauce, and, of course, macaroni as its main ingredients. The mass used is usually the snail type, those little curved straws, which absorb the sauce well.

As the dish is ubiquitous, you will find Mac and Cheese variables in different country states, such as the regions that use nutmeg in the recipe example. In New York, Marcella has even visited a restaurant that serves only Mac and Cheese and its variations, S’MAC in the East Village.

-Pulled pork sandwich

Pull pork sandwich.

The pulled pork sandwich is one of the typical main foods in the United States. This dish is made with pork shoulder meat, prepared slowly since its traditional recipe requires that the meat be roasted in smoke.

However, other adapted ways of preparing meat, such as slow cookers, electric pans responsible for preparing food more slowly, prevalent in American lands.

Even though the origin of the food is not publicized officially (I looked it up a few times and didn’t find much), the locals usually believe that this dish originated in Mexico and was later adapted by residents of the southern United States…

-Eggs Benedict

Eggs Benedict and American Breakfast for breakfast at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in New York.

Traditional American breakfast dish with English muffin, bacon, and poached egg with a delicious Dutch sauce.

It is usually served with some side dishes such as salad or even fries and is famous for brunch. Marcella’s favorite dish, which she always orders when she’s in the United States.

-Crab cake

The crab cake, or “crab cake,” in free translation, is a variety of fish cakes trendy in the United States, especially in the Boston region.

The recipe is made with crab meat and ingredients such as bread crumbs, mayonnaise, mustard, eggs, and various spices, while its preparation can be done in a roasted, grilled, or fried way.

Crab cakes are usually prepared without fillings since they have crab meat served on a plate or on the sandwich itself.

-Lobster Roll

Boston lobster roll

I take the cue from the Crab Cake to talk about the Lobster roll, a sandwich with a lobster filling in butter served on a fluffy white bread that looks like a hot dog. A landmark of New England cuisine, it can also be found easily in Boston.

-Barbecue ribs

Barbecue ribs are one of the typical foods in the United States that has already crossed borders and has been adapted by different cultures, including Brazil.

The recipe consisting of pork ribs with barbecue sauce is present in many restaurants and snack bars worldwide but has its origin in the United States. The preparation usually has some ingredients that we love, such as lemon, ketchup, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and oil.

-Tex Mex food

Table with Tex-Mex dishes.

Tex Mex is the name given to the mix of Mexican and American food (the name comes from Texas, which borders Mexico). This culture has spread mainly in the regions where the border between the two countries exists, as you should already imagine, right? And also, in border territories that used to belong to Mexico and are now Americans.

Typical Colorado and Utah foods are commonly associated with Tex Mex, mainly made up of guacamole, quesadillas, burritos, and tacos.

Another point that makes Tex Mex dishes one of the typical foods of the United States is in the mixture of culture and the use of pepper, so loved by this part of the population.

-Corn on the cob

This is another dish that many consume in Brazil and is nothing more than corn on the cob. The ear of sweet corn is harvested while the grains are still soft, making consumption easier and tastier. The preparation can be done employing boiling or roasting.

The dish’s origin is attributed to the North American natives, who ate the food due to the easy preparation. But as much as it is common for us, it is worth trying the corn on the cob in North America because the type of corn is different from our green corn, and the flavor is sweeter. I Love!

-Cajun and creole cuisine

Jambalaya, authentic Creole dish.

Cajun cuisine has an interesting origin and is very diverse. It was taken by the French colonists, expelled from Canada, and has traces of French and Spanish cuisine, not to mention the adaptations made by African slaves.

Among the most common dishes, I can highlight the fish and seafood stew, in addition to the lobster stew, the mayonnaise with condiments, and the fish fries.

-Hot dogs

Hot dog and chips in Los Angeles, at Wurstküche in Downtown LA.

Few foods are as popular as the traditional hot dog. The origin is controversial, and many say it is from Frankfurt, Germany (so much so that the name of the classic hot dog sausage is Frankfurter). But there is no doubt that the hot dog became famous as a typical food in the United States.

Although the food arrived in Brazil and underwent a series of adaptations, the original recipe takes only stale bread, sausage, pickles, mustard, and ketchup. In some cases, it may also have straw potatoes.

If you have the opportunity to visit the main metropolises in the United States, be sure to try the hot dog and even the street dogs. Indeed, your concept will no longer be the same for hot dogs, just like it happened to me, after all the sausage we found there is very different and very tasty. Besides, the hot dog is a very cheap and perfect option for a quick meal.

-Pancakes

Another typical food in the United States is a pancake, which is very traditional for breakfast. Do you know that ritual that we watch in series and movies? It does exist among the American population.

However, despite being very popular in the country, the origin of the pancakes is French, suffering the adaptations that we know today, such as the toppings and fillings of the most varied flavors. In the United States, honey and fruit syrups are the most common side dishes that include flour, eggs, and milk.

-Avocado Toast

Variety of avocados toasts. The traditional one would be with nothing but avocado.

Avocado toast is the name given to a dish that is a kind of open sandwich, whose base is usually toasting with avocado and may have some side dishes—that simple. Avocado toast has become familiar here, but it is already consecrated in the United States.

Like most of the options we mentioned here, a consensus was not reached between the natural origin of the dish, but while some give credit to California, others point to Australia as the mother of the recipe.

The more traditional version still includes bacon, tomatoes, and eggs in preparation, but several variations exist. So, if you want to know one of the most famous typical foods in the United States today, be sure to enjoy a good brunch and put Avocado Toast on your list.

-Brisket

The brisket is a ubiquitous beef in the preparation of the American barbecue. This cut is found in the chest of the ox, also used in Brazil, but here it is usually prepared in the pressure cooker.

The meat can be made roasted, on the barbecue, or even smoked, as it is prevalent in Texas. In this case, the brisket seasoning is made only with lemon and salt. The carnivores freak out. = P

-Hamburger

When we think of American cuisine, undoubtedly, one of the first foods that come to mind is hamburgers.

Almost every corner, you will find snack bars and fast-food chains. In the USA, this is a ubiquitous meal in many people’s daily lives, and the popular recipe can take crispy lettuce, cheddar, hamburger, onion, bacon, pickles, mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard.

The traditional accompaniment to the meal is french fries, french fries, if you have a vast, cold glass of soda, even better.

And as you might imagine, the experience of eating a hamburger on American soil is one of the most pleasurable of the entire trip. It is worth investing in a good hamburger to try the dish that we are already used to but in the land of Uncle Sam.

-S’mores

Who has never seen a movie or a teen series where the characters go camping, light a fire and burn marshmallows with a skewer?

Well, s’mores are bonfire snacks but go beyond the marshmallow and become an authentic sweet sandwich with a layer of marshmallow, one of chocolate, and two of biscuit. The coolest thing is that the chocolate melts in contact with the heat of the marshmallow.

Just looking at it makes your mouth water.

Its popularity is so great that there is a specific date to commemorate the day of s’mores in the United States on the 20th of August. They are also very popular in Canada, a neighboring country.

In addition to the campfire, you can also taste the s’mores in other versions, such as hot chocolate and cupcakes. The giant chocolate company Hershey’s even has a variety of sweets filled with s’mores.

What is the best typical food in the United States?

Honestly, if I could only point you to a favorite typical food after making a list like this, I would certainly be lying.
